Summary

Portuguese Cistercian monasteries, including the Monastery of Alcobaça, have undergone continuous architectural renewal and reform over nearly nine centuries, reflecting both regional construction traditions and broader cultural shifts. This study highlights how these monasteries absorbed local materials like granite in the north and limestone in the south while evolving stylistically and physically, often through expansions such as additional aisles or cloisters. Unconventional renewals, such as dual churches or open-air museums, also emerged from archaeological research. The findings underscore the monasteries' role in shaping Portuguese identity and culture, with ongoing reforms even in the 21st century driven by heritage institutes and individuals.
