Summary
Research reveals that peri-urbanization in the Xochimilco region of Mexico City is significantly accelerating environmental degradation, primarily due to irregular land occupation and state neglect. The study highlights how poverty-driven informal settlements, exacerbated by local government complicity, have worsened ecological conditions in this historically and ecologically valuable area. Key factors contributing to degradation include inadequate water supply, lack of drainage infrastructure, unchecked settlement expansion, and the discharge of untreated wastewater into canals. Fieldwork and 75 interviews were used to document these challenges, underscoring the urgent need for intervention to protect Xochimilco's unique lacustrine ecosystem.
