Summary

Ilha Grande, located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Paraty and Ilha Grande, stands out as one of the regions in Rio de Janeiro state with the highest records of bat species, both in terms of abundance and diversity. A long-term ecological study confirmed the presence of 36 bat species on the island by analyzing specimens from zoological collections and conducting mist net sampling in previously unstudied areas. The research compared five distinct studies conducted on Ilha Grande, each with varying objectives and sampling techniques, to 34 fauna inventories across Rio de Janeiro state. This comprehensive approach revealed that Ilha Grande not only boasts a rich bat diversity but also represents an area of significant capture effort, underscoring its importance for conservation efforts.
