Summary

A study mapping groundwater potential and recharge zones in the Melka Kunture Watershed, Ethiopia, reveals that over 79% of the area holds moderate to high groundwater potential, with 25.7% classified as high potential. Using GIS and remote sensing techniques combined with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), researchers identified key factors influencing groundwater suitability, including lithology, geomorphology, slope, and land use. The resulting maps, validated with an 88% accuracy rate against existing water sources, provide a reliable framework for sustainable water resource management in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. This approach offers a data-driven solution to address groundwater challenges exacerbated by climate change and overexploitation.
