Summary
Research on the cryptogenic red alga Chondria tumulosa at Manawai, Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument reveals a predominantly asexual reproductive system, with 20% of thalli bearing tetrasporophytic structures and no evidence of gametophytes. Genetic analysis using five microsatellite loci identified repeated genotypes in 41 thalli, indicating high rates of fragmentation and clonal reproduction. This suggests that C. tumulosa, which forms thick mats and reduces coral reef biodiversity, may spread rapidly to nearby atolls through asexual means. The study highlights the importance of understanding reproductive systems for managing invasive macroalgae, aligning with observed patterns in other red algal invasions.
