Summary
A 2020 survey in Ethiopia's Upper Awash Basin revisited rock-hewn sites documented by Richard Pankhurst in the 1970s, uncovering some of his mentioned sites while also identifying previously undocumented ones. Among these was a notable site near Melka Kunture, contributing to the long-standing record of such sites dating back to the mid-19th century. The study highlights the dynamic history of these locations, including their shifting functions and cultural reappropriation over time. By combining archival research with fieldwork, this work sheds light on the enduring significance of Ethiopia's rock-hewn heritage.
