Summary
Archaeological research in Europe's high mountain regions reveals significant human occupation from the early Holocene, challenging perceptions of these areas as predominantly natural. A study analyzing spatial distributions of archaeological sites in the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, a rugged part of Catalonia's Pyrenees, found that site locations are strongly dependent on current meadows and grasslands, as well as proximity to water, while winter solar exposure plays no significant role. This suggests that human activity in these environments has been more persistent and widespread than previously thought.
