Summary
Research at the Heraion of Samos reveals that structures previously identified as cisterns are actually wine press collecting tanks, challenging long-held assumptions about their function. The study also documents 50 wells, including three distinct types: shaft wells (with masonry lining), groundwater flowing wells (unique to the site), and flowing wells, which likely supported a terracotta pipe system supplying water from Hellenistic to Roman times. This interdisciplinary project combines archaeological recording with diachronic analysis to reconstruct the sanctuary's water supply infrastructure.
