Summary
The Inscription of Behistun, carved by Darius I during the Achaemenid Persian Empire (6th century BCE), serves as a monumental example of how written records were strategically employed to legitimize and consolidate royal power. This study reveals that the inscription's trilingual script—Elamite, Old Persian, and Babylonian—and its detailed narrative of Darius' ascent to power were not merely administrative or historical but functioned as a potent tool for political propaganda. The research employs a comparative analysis of ancient Near Eastern inscriptions, focusing on their structure, content, and contextual placement within the empire's governance. By examining the inscription's role in reinforcing Darius I's authority through narrative coherence and symbolic representation, this work sheds light on the intersection of literacy, power, and statecraft in one of history's first multi-ethnic empires.
