Summary

A strategic shift towards rural tourism can significantly alleviate pressure on UNESCO World Heritage Sites while fostering sustainable economic growth. This study demonstrates that diversifying tourism in Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Croatia, by promoting inland areas with eco-friendly attractions, delivers substantial socio-economic and environmental benefits. The proposed model outperforms alternative approaches in cost-benefit analysis, though it relies on external funding for viability until 2040. By leveraging EU and national financing, the region can enhance infrastructure, support local businesses, and preserve natural heritage, ensuring long-term resilience and municipal growth.
