Summary
Yedikule vegetable gardens, situated within Istanbul's UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic areas, represent one of the last living examples of the city's Byzantine-era vegetable gardening tradition. Despite their historical significance and potential to be protected under the cultural landscape category—introduced in 1992 for safeguarding both tangible and intangible heritage—the gardens currently lack formal protection status. A study analyzing interviews with local gardeners reveals that integrating these gardens into World Heritage conservation efforts could preserve traditional gardening practices, foster public engagement, and inform policy development. This approach would recognize the gardens' organic evolution alongside historic land walls, ensuring their survival as a cultural landscape while involving gardeners in decision-making processes.
