Summary
A violent phreatic eruption at Kambalny Volcano, South Kamchatka, in March–April 2017, was linked to asymmetric low-velocity anomalies beneath the volcanic edifice. These anomalies, identified through ambient noise tomography, correspond to loose pyroclastic deposits from past eruptions and deep hydrothermal sources. The study suggests that fluid migration in these vents, particularly to the north and west of the volcano, may have interacted with the magma chamber, triggering the explosive eruption. This finding aligns with independent body wave data and geological observations, providing a clearer understanding of the upper crust structure beneath Kambalny Volcano.
