Summary
A rare collection of fifteen wooden objects, including boxes, mirror cases, sigillaria containers, writing tablets, furniture hinges, spinning spindles, and a wicker basket base, was discovered in a well (PT3094) dating to 60-70 AD during archaeological excavations at the Place d’Assas in Nîmes. These artifacts, preserved in a humid environment, provide unprecedented insights into Roman-era woodworking techniques and materials, with identified species and manufacturing processes revealed through analysis of chippings and waste from cutting or sawing. The well’s proximity to the forum suggests that skilled artisans were likely active in the vicinity, contributing to our understanding of commercial and public life in this UNESCO-listed city.
