Summary
A study on the northern Hoh Xil region reveals that rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs), critical for national resource security, exhibit distinct distribution patterns in lake waters. Rb concentrations range from 2.32 to 2467.7 µg/L, while Cs ranges from 0.65 to 945.53 µg/L, with spatial variations linked to total dissolved solids (TDS) levels—higher in the western lakes than the eastern ones, particularly in Lake Leixudong. However, an observed freshening trend poses challenges for future resource exploitation. The study attributes Rb and Cs enrichment primarily to high-content thermal spring inputs, water evaporation, and water-rock interactions, with Rb typically exceeding Cs (Rb/Cs > 1) except in specific lakes like Yima Lake and parts of Qingshai Lake. Hydrogen-oxygen isotopes indicate mixed sources, including atmospheric precipitation, magmatic water, and river/groundwater inputs. This research advances the understanding of Rb and Cs enrichment mechanisms in Hoh Xil salt lakes and provides a scientific foundation for sustainable resource management.
