Summary
Cities that transition from promoting urban orchards to establishing comprehensive urban agricultural programs are better positioned to implement food policies, contributing significantly to resilience and sustainable urban development. This study highlights the case of Quito, Ecuador, where the Participatory Urban Agriculture Project (AGRUPAR) has been instrumental in advancing agro-ecological urban agriculture for nearly two decades. By integrating urban agriculture with broader public food policies, Quito aims to strengthen its food security and resilience. The research emphasizes the importance of understanding the entire agri-food system—from production to post-consumption—to connect it with the right to food, the right to the city, and environmental health. While progress has been made, the study underscores the need for a more integrated urban policy that incorporates urban agriculture to fully realize its potential in enhancing Quito's food security.
