Summary
A rural community in the Romanian Danube Delta harbors deeply negative perceptions of the golden jackal (Canis aureus), shaped by historical, ecological, and geographical factors. This study reveals how villagers' knowledge of the species is formed through wildlife monitoring, interviews, and participant observation, highlighting the jackal's symbolic significance. The findings suggest that such perceptions must be addressed in future management plans to support rewilding efforts effectively.
