Summary
Research at El Tajín, Veracruz, has uncovered the first funerary monument from the Epiclassic period (250–600 CE) in the Gulf Coast region of Mexico. This discovery, a previously unknown tomb within the Conjunto Arquitectónico del Edificio de las Columnas, provides rare insight into the political structure and lineage of late rulers at this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Though the tomb was found empty, ancient organic residues on its floor were analyzed using ancient DNA techniques, revealing potential traces of biological material that could elucidate familial or social connections among El Tajín's elite. The study bridges archaeological excavation with genetic analysis to reconstruct social hierarchies in a pivotal period of Mesoamerican history.
