Summary

Researchers have identified and described a new species of jumping spider, Trite pollardi sp. nov., previously known from behavioral studies as 'Holoplatys sp.' This discovery contributes to the understanding of the genus Trite's diversity and distribution, particularly in New Zealand, New Caledonia, Lord Howe Island, and Norfolk Island. The study distinguishes two species groups within Trite: the planiceps-group, found across multiple regions, and the incognita-group, limited to New Zealand. Additionally, it proposes three scenarios for the origin, relationships, and radiation of Trite in these areas while excluding three previously misclassified species from the genus. The research integrates behavioral observations with taxonomic analysis to elucidate evolutionary patterns.
