Summary

Bisotun, located in the central Zagros region of western Iran, emerges as a significant center reflecting Achaemenid power during the 6th to 4th centuries BCE. Unlike other regions that have been extensively studied, Bisotun's archaeological potential has remained underexplored due to limited material evidence. This study challenges conventional interpretations by arguing that Bisotun played a multifaceted role in administrative, economic, military, and ceremonial capacities during the Achaemenid period. Leveraging current documentation and historical geography insights, the research suggests that while the eastern part of the central Zagros (e.g., Ecbatana) was more prominent, Bisotun's strategic importance was equally pivotal. The study highlights the need for further exploration in western and northern parts of the region to fully understand its dynamics during this era.
