Summary
Scientists have discovered yurmarinite, a new arsenate mineral with the formula Na7(Fe3+,Mg,Cu)4(AsO4)6, in sublimates from the Arsenatnaya fumarole at Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka. This mineral forms as transparent, pale green to colorless crystals and exhibits unique structural features, including a 3D heteropolyhedral framework composed of M4O18 clusters linked with AsO4 tetrahedra. Yurmarinite is optically uniaxial and has a calculated density of 4.00 g/cm³. The discovery contributes to the understanding of arsenate minerals formed in volcanic exhalations and honors Professor Yuriy B. Marin, a renowned Russian mineralogist. The study employed electron microprobe analysis, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy to characterize the mineral's properties.
