Summary
A new study reveals the iconographic program of seven previously unknown icons painted by M. A. Rogozhkin for the Dormition Cathedral's pillars at the Trinity Sergius Lavra between 1881-1882, contributing significantly to the understanding of 19th-century Russian ecclesiastical art. The research reconstructs the cathedral's pillar complex from this period and demonstrates how the arrangement of icons created a semantic space linking venerated monastery images with patron saints of the royal house. Using historical, archival, and iconographic methods, the study traces the placement and significance of these icons, uncovering their relationship to the cathedral's interior decoration and its historical context during Archimandrite Leonid's renovations.
