Summary
Research reveals that the engraved portraits of Flemish painters by Jan Meyssens (1649) served as a key source for Lázaro Díaz del Valle's biographical manuscript, Origen e Ilustración del nobilísimo y real arte de la pintura (1656–1659), predating its inclusion in Cornelis de Bie’s Het Gulden Cabinet (1661). The study identifies this as an early instance of diffusion outside Flanders, analyzing two series from the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD) and the Plantin-Moretus Prentenkabinet in Antwerp. This finding sheds light on the cross-cultural influence of Flemish art discourse in 17th-century Spain.
