Summary

Bishop Cosin's architectural legacy at Durham Castle and Cathedral, including the creation of Renaissance-style gardens and gate piers, has been highlighted through an analysis of historical inventories from 1628 and 1672. This study reveals that both Bishop Neile and Cosin were pivotal in modernizing church architecture while maintaining traditional elements, significantly transforming Durham Castle into a magnificent palace. The research sheds light on the often-overlooked architectural contributions of these bishops before the civil wars, emphasizing their dual role as modernizers and traditionalists.
