Summary

A novel software, Intelligent Cloud Viewer (ICV), demonstrates unprecedented efficiency in managing and visualizing large-scale point clouds, even on standard computing systems. Developed by AESEI software (a spin-off of Politecnico di Bari), ICV leverages advanced computational techniques, including Open Inventor for graphics, CGAL for geometry, and PCL for point cloud processing, to handle tens of millions of points with optimized rendering. Tested on photogrammetric and TLS data, the platform excels in tasks such as georeferencing, matching, decimation, and distance calculations. Its application at Castel del Monte showcased rapid data acquisition—800 photos in 15 minutes—with high coverage, validating its potential for large-scale heritage surveys.
