Summary

This study reveals the dynamic and contradictory ways contemporary residents of Oświęcim (Auschwitz) construct meaning around their town's complex past, blending pre-war Catholic-Jewish coexistence, wartime Nazi occupation, the Holocaust, and post-Communist Poland narratives. Drawing on fieldwork and interactional sociology frameworks—inspired by Mead and Goffman—it examines how these memories evolve in both offline and online contexts. The research highlights the fluidity of historical memory, showing that residents' narratives adapt to social interactions, challenging static interpretations of collective remembrance.
