Summary

Over the past decade, agricultural development in Yemen's Tihama region has been characterized by a significant shift towards lift-pump farming, which has expanded substantially since the 1970s. This modern irrigation method has bypassed traditional spate-irrigated wadis, such as those around Zabid, Risyan, and Jizan, which historically served as the core of settlement and production. The study highlights that optimal agricultural conditions are only feasible in small areas with assured irrigation, emphasizing the need to expand these zones for broader development. By analyzing historical and recent trends, the research underscores the transformative impact of lift-pump farming on the region's agricultural landscape.
