Summary
Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) around Kahuzi-Biega National Park (KBNP), Democratic Republic of Congo, serve as a significant alternative income source and nutritious food for local communities. The study identified 55 NTFPs exploited primarily for self-consumption, contributing 23.3% to household incomes—second only to agriculture. Key species like Solanum nigrum, Termitomyces robustus, Amaranthus viridis, and Piper nigrum are rich in proteins, dietary fibers, zinc, and iron, though some require processing to mitigate anti-nutritional elements. While NTFPs create employment opportunities, challenges such as low market values (48.6%), short shelf life (22.5%), and excessive taxation hinder their potential. The research underscores the role of NTFPs in alleviating poverty and hidden hunger, advocating for their promotion to sustain livelihoods around protected areas.
