Summary

Bauhaus, once perceived as a unified design movement, is revealed to be a diverse collection of voices and ideas centered on community and subjectivity. This article challenges the conventional narrative by examining its roots in 19th-century educational reform and its evolution under the political turbulence of 1920s-30s Germany. It proposes that these foundational principles may offer valuable insights for contemporary art and design education, suggesting a potential shift away from traditional norms. The study was presented during the 'Bauhaus Utopia in Crisis' conference at the University of the Arts London, complementing the 'OurHaus' festival and the exhibition 'Utopia in Crisis', which toured to Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
