Summary

Research at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Monte San Giorgio reveals critical insights into the transition from shallow to deep-water environments during the Middle Triassic. The study, conducted on the Kádárta section of Hungary's Transdanubian Range, identified a significant gap between Pelsonian (Middle Anisian) shallow-marine carbonates and overlying late Illyrian (latest Anisian) deep-water successions, indicating rapid subsidence following the break-up of the Neotethys. Integrated biostratigraphy and radiometric dating enabled precise correlations with other key sections in the western Neotethys, such as those in the Dinarides and Southern Alps. This work highlights the dynamic paleoenvironmental changes that shaped Monte San Giorgio's geological history.
