Summary

Urban tourism plays a pivotal role in city development yet is often marginalized in urban studies. This edited book by Prof Nicola Bellini and Assoc Prof Cecilia Pasquinelli addresses this gap, presenting an integrative agenda that explores the complex interrelationships between tourism development and urban transformation across 24 chapters. It highlights key challenges faced by city destinations, such as the disconnect between urban planning and tourism development, the role of culture and heritage in shaping city products, and the tensions arising from tourism's impact on urban wellbeing. The book proposes integrated analytical frameworks, participatory place branding, and innovative tools like smart tourism technologies to aid policymakers in managing and measuring urban tourism effectively. While primarily focused on European case studies, it calls for broader perspectives to enrich future research on overtourism and sustainability.
