Summary

Residents' perceptions and attitudes towards sustainable tourism development in traditional villages vary significantly across economic, environmental, social, and cultural dimensions. A qualitative study employing stakeholder theory and grounded theory approach, conducted through semi-structured interviews with 12 stakeholders in Hongcun—a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site—revealed nuanced sub-themes influencing these areas. The findings underscore the importance of integrating residents' perspectives into sustainable tourism strategies at local, societal, and business levels to ensure balanced development. This research provides actionable insights for policymakers, businesses, and communities aiming to preserve cultural heritage while fostering sustainable growth in traditional villages.
