Summary
A significant discovery links the white handkerchief depicted in frescoes of the Virgin Mary in Serbian Orthodox monasteries (13th–14th centuries) to two sacred Christian symbols: the eileton, a cloth used during the Divine Eucharist, and the swaddling or burial linens associated with Jesus Christ. This hypothesis, rooted in theological and liturgiological analysis, reinterprets the handkerchief’s role as both a representation of Mary’s divine maternity and a liturgical symbol connecting her to the Eucharistic Table. The study examines frescoes from Studenica, Gračanica, and Dečani Monasteries, integrating iconographic evidence with liturgical tradition to propose a deeper symbolic layer in Orthodox Christian art.
