Summary
Eustachy Kossakowski's photobooks, August Zamoyski (1974) and Lumières de Chartres (1989), transcend traditional art reproduction by creating autonomous artistic works. Unlike conventional documentation, Kossakowski recontextualizes sculptures in the first book, while the second shifts focus to the emotional and sensory experience of light within Chartres Cathedral. This transformation aligns with Walter Benjamin’s theories on art reproduction but diverges from Mieke Bal’s 'ecstatic aesthetic,' emphasizing the photographer's interpretive role. The study reveals that Kossakowski’s approach elevates photography from mere documentation to an artistic medium, offering a unique aesthetic experience distinct from the original works.
