Summary
Historical and recent evidence suggests the Aeolian Islands (Isole Eolie) may still harbor one of the Mediterranean's most endangered seals, the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus). Though extirpated from much of its range, accounts from 18th- and 19th-century travel literature and local reports from the early 20th century indicate these islands were part of its former central Mediterranean habitat. Documented sightings in the past two decades reinforce the need for systematic monitoring of potential seal habitats across the archipelago to assess possible residual populations or recolonization opportunities.
