Summary
A ship grounding incident at Gili Lawa Darat Marine National Park, part of Komodo National Park, caused significant damage to coral reefs, affecting both their physical structure and biological integrity. The study measured a total damaged area of 46.89 m² using the irregular polygon method, while underwater photo transect (UPT) analysis revealed severe degradation in coral condition, dropping from 35.13% in control areas to just 14% in the trajectory zone of the grounding impact. The damage included coral uprooting, fragmentation, and substrate displacement, highlighting the vulnerability of these ecosystems to anthropogenic threats. The research underscores the ecological and economic consequences of such incidents, emphasizing the urgent need for rehabilitation efforts and compensation by shipowners to restore reef functionality.
