Summary

A network of interconnected factors, including geological heritage, science communication, education, and local stakeholder engagement, is identified as crucial for the sustainable development of geotourism in UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGPs). This study highlights that successful implementation requires more than just infrastructure development—such as signage—and necessitates a holistic approach integrating multiple elements. Examples from UGGPs like Lesvos Island (Greece), Naturtejo (Portugal), Vulkaneifel (Germany), and Hong Kong (China), alongside the Messel Pit World Heritage Site (WHS, Germany), demonstrate how this conceptual framework can be applied to foster sustainable tourism aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda. The research combines field observations, website analyses, and published materials to assess these practices.
