Summary

Modernist architecture, characterized by its extensive use of steel and glass building envelopes, faces significant preservation challenges due to defects in the building fabric. This study evaluates the current technological approaches to addressing these issues through three primary strategies: restoration, rehabilitation, and replacement. Focusing on 20 iconic buildings across Europe and the USA—including Fallingwater House by Frank Lloyd Wright and the Fagus Factory by Walter Gropius—the research provides a comprehensive overview of how architectural design, building physics, and historic preservation principles are applied to maintain these structures. The findings highlight the effectiveness and limitations of each strategy, offering practical insights for the conservation of modernist heritage sites.
