Summary
Rising temperatures due to climate change are set to significantly alter viticulture in the Wachau region, potentially shifting its wine production closer to that of Bordeaux, France. The study analyzed historical weather data from 1971–2006 and projected future temperature increases using a climate scenario specific to Austria. By applying Gladstones' heat summation model, researchers found that higher temperatures could extend grape ripening periods, possibly increasing sugar content but also altering wine quality characteristics. This comparison with Bordeaux highlights the potential for regional adaptation strategies in viticulture.
