Summary
Research in the Talamanca Range-La Amistad Reserves reveals unexpected evidence of Late Pleistocene glaciation at elevations below 1000 meters, challenging previous assumptions that glacial activity in Costa Rica was confined to peaks above 3000 meters. The study identifies distinct glacial landforms, including U-shaped valleys, frontal and lateral moraines, megalithic deposits with striations, polished rock planes, and striae parallel to valleys along the San Rafael, San Pedro, and Peñas Blancas rivers. These features provide compelling evidence for significant glaciation during the Late Pleistocene in the Valle del General, suggesting that glacial processes extended to lower elevations than previously recognized.
