Summary

The critically endangered sturgeon species Pseudoscaphirhynchus hermanni has not been recorded in Tajikistan since extensive ichthyological surveys from 2005 to 2020, despite previous sightings in the lower reaches of the Vakhsh River within the Tigrovaya Balka Nature Reserve. The species, last documented between 1995 and 1997, is now considered critically endangered (sensu IUCN) due to its restricted distribution, possibly limited to the Amu Darya and lower Vakhsh River basins. While no specimens were examined in this study, historical data suggest a dramatic decline, highlighting urgent conservation concerns for this rare sturgeon in Tajikistan's UNESCO-listed landscapes.
