Summary
A comprehensive structural health monitoring (SHM) system has been developed for the Bibi-Khanum Mosque in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, to ensure its long-term preservation. The study combines real-time seismic monitoring with subsequent laser scans to detect structural anomalies and geometric changes. Preliminary results from the first phase show that seismometers installed throughout the monument can identify potential structural issues by analyzing shifts in resonant frequencies caused by earthquakes or ambient vibrations. The second phase involves annual laser scanning to capture 3D point clouds, which help monitor global movements linked to underground water table fluctuations. This dual approach aims to support future restoration efforts and develop preventive measures for this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
