Summary
Ani, the medieval capital of Armenia, showcases remarkable palace architecture that reflects its significance as a cultural and political center. This study highlights the unique qualities of Ani's palace complexes, which, despite their poor state of preservation, offer valuable insights into medieval Armenian architectural traditions. The research analyzes existing archaeological reports and descriptions from earlier expeditions, particularly those led by N. Ya. Marr, to reconstruct the palatial structures' compositions and significant architectural forms. Key observations focus on planning, construction techniques, and decorative elements, identifying areas for further investigation. The study also addresses debated questions about the palace functions of certain Ani structures, linking them to broader architectural transformations in the Near East. Funded by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation, this research contributes to understanding Ani's role as a global phenomenon in medieval art and architecture.
