Summary
A study on Komodo National Park (KNP) reveals that unrestricted tourism could lead to a significant loss of ecosystem services, valued at USD 727 million, while limiting visitor numbers could reduce this loss to just USD 661 thousand. The research employs expert-based in-depth discussions, interpretive structural modelling, and system dynamics methods, complemented by the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial analysis, and market valuation techniques. These findings underscore the feasibility of balancing tourism growth with ecosystem restoration to achieve sustainable economic benefits. The study also suggests integrating visitor management across KNP's islands—Komodo, Padar, Labuan Bajo, and West Manggarai—to mitigate environmental impacts while extending tourist stays.
