Summary
Modern volunteer-driven conservation projects on the Russian North, particularly those focused on wooden churches like Kizhi Pogost, reveal how social interactions and shared labor can transform semi-ruined structures into recognized architectural and sacred heritage. This study, based on ethnographic fieldwork from 2016 to 2022 and firsthand volunteer participation between 2019 and 2022, deconstructs the process of 'creating' heritage by analyzing how volunteers, local communities, and historical objects interplay during restoration efforts. The research highlights the dynamic social processes that accompany such conservation practices, challenging traditional notions of heritage preservation and raising new questions about the reinvention of cultural memory in contemporary Russia.
