Summary

A multidisciplinary approach has been developed to address the challenges posed by Pietraforte sandstone facades, a common yet vulnerable material in Florentine Renaissance architecture. This methodology combines historic analysis, architectural survey, and advanced diagnostics—including optometric, mechanical, physical, mineralogical, and petrographic characterization—to assess weathering and pollution-related decay. Applied to the Palazzo Medici Riccardi, the study provides critical insights into the material's vulnerabilities, enabling the design of targeted restoration solutions and monitoring protocols. By integrating expertise from architecture, geology, and material diagnostics, this research aims to preserve Florence’s architectural heritage while ensuring visitor safety.
