Summary

A novel strain of Streptomyces (ERINLG-51) isolated from the Dolphin Nose hills, Nilgiris, in the Southern Western Ghats demonstrates promising antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties. The ethyl acetate extract derived from its fermentation broth exhibited strong antibacterial activity against a range of pathogens, including Shigella flexneri, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with minimum inhibitory concentrations as low as 125 µg/mL. Notably, the extract also displayed significant cytotoxic effects on A549 lung adenocarcinoma cells, achieving 72% activity at 1000 µg/mL and an IC50 of 600 µg/mL. This suggests potential for identifying novel bioactive molecules with applications in both antimicrobial therapy and cancer treatment.
