Summary

Tartary buckwheat demonstrates superior adaptability and productivity compared to common buckwheat when cultivated in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. Research found that Tartary buckwheat exhibited a 2.3-fold increase in plant height and a threefold higher number of flowers per plant (731 vs. 244). While seed setting rates were similar between the two species (44-46%), Tartary buckwheat achieved a significantly higher estimated total seed yield (184 kg/10 a) compared to common buckwheat (108 kg/10 a). This study introduces buckwheat as a promising new agricultural crop for the region, with potential applications in food and medicine. The research evaluated growth metrics under local conditions, providing insights into its viability as an alternative or supplementary staple.
