Summary
Gjirokastra, Albania's historic center, faces significant threats to its unique Ottoman-styled urban and architectural heritage. A multidisciplinary analysis, combining traditional survey methods with innovative tools like laser scanning and photogrammetry, revealed critical transformations endangering the site's authenticity. The study, part of the 3D Past project, identified stone and wood as primary building materials shaping the city's landscape, influenced by its valley topography. While current conservation strategies aim at sustainable safeguarding, future measures are needed to preserve Gjirokastra's tangible and intangible heritage for future generations.
