Summary

A shift towards sustainable development in China, marked by the rise of Xi Jinping's presidency and the adoption of environmentally conscious policies, is examined through a decade-long study (2008–2018) at Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve. The research highlights two contrasting development projects—one within the reserve and another outside—revealing divergent outcomes in balancing conservation with local needs. By integrating perspectives from Arturo Escobar, Rosi Braidotti, and Xiaobo Su, the study argues for a sustainable ethics that prioritizes marginalized farmers' voices and local politics amid rapid change. The findings underscore the potential of inclusive, place-based sustainability to mitigate authoritarian environmental policies while fostering circular economic growth.
