Summary

Urban green spaces (UGS) in Gondar City, Ethiopia, have expanded at a rate of 17.7 hectares annually from 1991 to 2024, despite significant land use and land cover changes driven by urbanization, population growth, and illegal settlements. The study, using supervised image classification and spatial analysis tools like ArcGIS and ERDAS Imagine, found that while built-up areas increased by 4,051.99 hectares, UGS gained 584.15 hectares, with the highest conversions occurring from croplands and water bodies. These findings underscore the need for strategic urban planning to sustainably manage green infrastructure, offering critical insights for policymakers in balancing urban development with environmental conservation.
